How to Play Blackjack Site Map

Play BlackjackThe United States has a wide range of blackjack games available across the country. From the gambling capital of the world, Las Vegas, to Atlantic City and many places in between, you are probably not very far from a blackjack table no matter where you are in the US. I have quite a few pages that cover US blackjack, with most of them listed to the right in the menu. You can learn more about individual states and cities that have blackjack games by following those links or at online casino USA. Each one includes details about places to play in each area.

Card Counting at US Blackjack Casinos

One question I receive about playing blackjack in the US is the legality of counting cards at the blackjack tables. As far as I know it is, strictly speaking, legal to count cards everywhere in the United States as long as you only use your brain to do the counting. You can not use any type of electronic device to count. The use of an electronic device is illegal. However, even if you are counting in your head, if the casino figures it out (assuming you are any good at it) they can kick you out in some places like Las Vegas. Even in the places where they can't even kick you out for counting like Atlantic city, they can make the game so unfavorable that counting won't help you. For example, they can start shuffling the cards at 50% penetration and/or only let you play 6 or 8 deck shoes.

So it is always a good idea to do everything possible in a US casino to not let the casino know you are counting cards. The entire card counting strategy and camouflage details available to you are outside of the scope of this page, but here are a few tips.

  1. Never count out loud.
  2. Try not to look like you are concentrating too hard on the cards as they are being dealt.
  3. If at all possible learn how to carry on a normal conversation with the dealer or other players while counting. This is a skill and takes practice, but most casino personnel will not think you can count and talk at the same time so they won't pay too much attention to you.
  4. If you are asked to leave, do not argue. Quietly collect your things, don't forget your chips, and leave. There are plenty of other places to play blackjack. If you make a scene or touch one of the casino personnel they can hold you.

There are no standard sets of rules across the different blackjack venues in the USA. You can often find different rules variations for blackjack in the same casino. With the wide range of options including those listed below, it is no wonder there are so many different combinations.

  • Insurance
  • Surrender
  • Splitting
  • Doubling Down
  • Stand or hit on soft 17

US Blackjack Laws

One last word of caution: Unless you are playing in a casino, always be aware of the local laws concerning gambling. Blackjack is not a legal game in every state in the US, or even every area in some states that have casino games. Of course you have to decide when and where you are willing to play (I am most assuredly not here to tell you what to do with your life) you should also make educated decisions, especially when it comes to US gambling laws.
